The challenge.
Navimeteo commissioned Progetto Automazione S.r.l. to develop the Lightning Map. Progetto Automazione, the company behind ProgestNOW and our direct client, appointed ZenCode Solutions to build the application layer. At sea, radar conditions, lightning activity and vessel positions change quickly: weather operators and captains needed a shared view to monitor severe weather in real time, identify how close events were to vessels and review historical lightning activity within a selected area.
The solution.
Commissioned directly by Progetto Automazione, ZenCode Solutions developed the map’s application layer. Radar and lightning data are sourced through Vaisala, while vessel positions arrive via AIS with an alternative source available if needed. Proximity zones around vessels define three alert levels—yellow, orange and red—which trigger real-time web and email notifications. Archive mode lets users select a point and review lightning recorded in that area, while captains and authorised operators can access the map directly.
A shared operational view.
The platform brings weather data, positions and alert levels into a shared operational view. The colour scale makes proximity immediately recognisable, notifications extend the information beyond the map and the archive provides access to recorded lightning activity in a selected area.
